Apple’s popular iPad launches in Australia and eight other countries this Friday.
The tablet device, which will sell from $629, is however likely to be in very short supply after Apple’s preorder website was rushed, resulting in its initial cache of units being snapped up in two days.
Customers who pre-ordered their iPads on May 10 or May 11 will see their units shipped by Apple this Friday however, those who pre-ordered after that date won’t see their iPads until June 8 at the earliest.
Any units that actually do make it to Apple stores for this Friday’s launch are expected to be sold quickly.
Apple released the iPad in the US on April 3 and promptly sold more than one million units within the first 28 days.
Research analysts at US firm RBC Capital Markets expect the company to shift some 38,000 iPads between this Friday and June 30 with another 58,000 selling in the September quarter and another 81,000 during the December quarter for a total of 176,000 this year.
Six models will be available – a Wi-Fi only unit and a Wi-Fi + 3G data model, each available in three storage capacities – 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. The top of the line 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G unit will sell for $1049.
The other countries to launch the iPad this week are Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

There are tablets that are technologically superior to the iPad (HPSlate and Notion Ink’s Adam). However these devices are not optimized for the Mobile Platform. The HPSlate is running on Windows 7, an awkward choice for a touch oriented device. Notion Ink’s Adam is running on Android 2.0, however it is run on a Pixel Qi screen (colored e-ink) — not a good substitute for LCD. 64gb iPad|32gb iPad

Actually, Slate is not running Windows 7 any longer – it will be running WebOS, the operating system it purchased recently in the buyout of Palm.
