May 28 is here, which means that Australia joins eight other countries around the world with all-night sleep-out geeks eager to get their hands on Apple’s latest wondertoy, the iPad.

As news reports have filtered through all day about snaking queues, high-fives and stellar sales figures, one question to be asked is that beyond those keen to get one a minute after 8am this morning, is the rest of Australia as interested in the iPad?

Apple’s retail stores have been doing a roaring trade but it may not be commonly known that the tablet computer is also being sold through Myer, JB Hi-Fi, David Jones and Dick Smith Electronics stores.

Stocks of the cheaper 16GB models have all but been exhausted through the company stores according to news reports but it’s not the case everywhere. We checked with Dick Smith’s Penrith Sydney store, which still had stocks of the 16GB model in both Wi-Fi and 3G+WiFi versions.

According to a report from US-based RBC Capital Markets, Apple is estimated to sell 37,000 iPads in Australia before June 30, 58,000 units during the September quarter and 81,000 models during the Christmas quarter for a total of 176,000 for 2010.

Apple released the iPad in the US on April 3 and later reported selling more than one million units in the first 28 days.
