HP’s woes regarding faulty notebook batteries continued when the computing giant yesterday extended its worldwide global battery recall, adding new notebook models to the problem list.
Some 31 notebook models are now affected, having been shipped between August 2007 and May 2008 with batteries that may provde to be a safety hazard. The Lithium-ion batteries affected can overheat according to the company, posing a fire and burn hazard it said in a statement.
HP is taking a cautious approach as it believes less than 3% of the models affected were sold with the affected batteries.
However, the company is asking consumers with the affected model numbers to check the battery using a simple validation process that involves checking the battery serial number.
Any battery with noted serial number should be returned to HP, who will issue a replacement free of charge.
?For more information, check the HP website.
The company has not specified which regions the affected models were sold into however, the global nature of the recall suggests HP is not taking any chances.??
The statement doesn’t mention who made the batteries.
Since April 2006, over two million notebook batteries manufactured by Sony have been recalled due to potential fire risk.
The last major recall was in October 2008 when 100,000 batteries sold by Dell, Toshiba and HP were recalled due to overheating issues.
