Chip giant Intel has announced the next generation of its CULV (consumer, ultra low voltage) processors based on its Core i-series technology.

The new processors are built using the company’s 32-nanometre lithography process, offering a claimed 32% performance increase and 32% thinner notebook designs.

The chips are available across the Core i3, i5 and i7 series and are designed to couple up to Intel’s new Mobile Intel 5-series chipsets.

Entry-level Core i3

The entry-level model is the Core i3-330UM – a dual-core, quad-threaded model running at 1.2GHz with 3MB of smart cache. It supports Intel’s virtualisation technology (VT-x), supports up to 8GB of RAM and has Intel high-definition graphics built into the CPU. It’s also 64-bit OS ready.

Mid-range Core i5

The mid-range option is the Core i5-520UM – a dual-core, quad-threaded CPU running at 1.06GHz with 3MB of smart cache. This chip features TurboBoost Technology, allowing the clock speed to rise up to 1.866GHz for single-core applications. It’s VT-x ready, has HD graphics on-board, support for 8GB of RAM and is 64-bit OS ready.

Top-draw Core i7

Intel has put most work into its dual-core Core i7 series with four models here – Core i7-620LM, Core i7-640LM, Core i7-620UM, Core i7-640UM.

The Core i7-640LM and Core i7-620LM processors are higher-performance chips with higher clock speeds. The Core i7-620LM runs at 2GHz and supports TurboBoost up to 2.8GHz while the Core i7-640LM hits 2.13GHz with a TurboBoost maximum of 2.933GHz. Beyond that, the features of these two chips are identical with dual cores, four threads, 4MB of Smart cache memory, support for 8GB of RAM, Intel HD graphics with a clock sped of 166GHz, boostable to 566MHz, 64-bit OS ready, VT-x-ready and featuring Hyper-Threading.

The Core i7-640UM and Core i7-620UM chips are lower-powered models with similar clock speeds to the Core i3-330M and 520UM. The Core i7-640UM clocks in at 1.2GHz but will TurboBoost to an impressive 2.266GHz while the Core i7-620UM has a standard clock of 1.06GHz but will TurboBoost to 2.133GHz. Both chips feature 4MB of smart cache, support up to 8GB of RAM, run Intel HD graphics at 166MHz, ramping up to 500MHz. Beyond that, the features are the same as the LM series.

The company claims battery life has also been improved by up to 15%.
