Software giant Microsoft today announced the release of its new mobile Hotmail SMS service in India.

Available to all Hotmail users, the new SMS service allows users to receive, read and reply to emails via SMS. The service is a low-cost option for India’s 506million mobile phone users, of whom, only 18million have GPRS (general packet radio service) normally used for email interaction.

All users need is a Hotmail or Live ID and a mobile phone.

“Today staying connected is very important. We have gone on to integrate two of the most widely used and needed technologies and tools that help people stay connected – email and SMS. We saw a large addressable audience who would require a service such as this to make email available to them while on the go. We wanted to ensure that it’s simple, easily accessible and absolutely free. So now consumers are connected anytime anywhere and can actually carry their Hotmail in their pocket”, said Prashant Thakur, Head Mobile Services & Search, Microsoft India Pvt. Ltd.

Microsoft will also update Hotmail to allow social networking SMS alerts from Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn in the coming months according to the company statement.

The software giant also announced that its Hotmail service now has an expanded capacity for attachments, up to 10GB per message.
