As if Apple didn’t have enough to worry about with its dramas with the iPhone 4′s antenna, stories are growing of news that Apple’s cornerstone iTunes and App Store services have been hacked.

The news began surfacing on July 4 by TheNextWeb amidst growing reports on Twitter and web forums about hacked iTunes accounts over the US holiday weekend.

Reports are alleging that developers used stolen account details to fake purchases of their apps to push them higher up in the App Store’s top spots with the result that in one category 40 of the top 50 apps are now from a single developer.

Some users are alleging upwards of $600 have been spent on apps they never actually purchased themselves.

The (unofficial) word is if you have left your card details on your iTunes account, remove them as soon as you can or change your password and change the payment option to “none”.

While Apple’s products might be as popular as ever given the official company statements, the company now seems to be on the hit list for hackers.

Users should treat iTunes and the App Store as any other website and remain vigilant about their credit card and personal account details.

The company is yet to respond to the reports as of time of publishing.
{UPDATE: According to news.com.au, the developer’s account and his “top 40″ book apps have been removed by Apple.}
