It will likely prove to be one of the most important product launches for the fledgling Android tablet market, a device that delivers features and design without the sub-standard performance we’ve seen from most budget-priced tablets so far.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has probably been one the five ever-worst kept secrets (the other four belong to Apple) but now that’s it’s finally out in the open, it’s time to see whether the Tab has the capability to deliver on its promise.

The first good move is that it’ll be powered by a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, so it should have plenty of zip. Throw in Google’s new Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system and you’ll get the benefit of improve power management and other new features, including Adobe Flash Player 10.1.

With its seven-inch TFT LCD panel, the Tab (or GT-P1000 as it will be technically known as) is said to weight just 380grams, or a little over half the weight of the 9.7-inch Apple iPad.

Samsung will build 3G HSPA, 802.11n Wi-Fi and BlueTooth 3.0 into the Tab, giving it very decent wireless connectivity.

The Cortex A8 processor is fast enough to handle MPEG-4-grade high-definition video. And to that end, the Galaxy Tab is the first DivX-certified tablet device. It’ll also play Xvid, H.264 and most other codecs.

Storage for the device will be a choice of 16GB or 32GB internal plus a MicroSD expansion slot for an extra 32GB capacity.

Samsung says the device will be available in Europe in late September with the US and Japan to follow “shortly after”.
