Australian telco giant Telstra has taken the wraps off its first mobile tablet device. Called the T-Touch Tab, the new device features a 7-inch 480×800-pixel LCD panel and runs Google’s Android 2.1 operating system.

It’s powered by a 768MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and features 3G connectivity on 850/1900/2100MHz for Telstra’s 3G network. The unit comes with 512MB of RAM plus a MicroSD card slot expandable up to 16GB.

Unfortunately, the T-Touch Tab’s screen is only a resistive type – so don’t expect to be able to swipe and flick your apps around as easily as you would on your smartphone. Telstra includes a stylus to make app selections with.

There are two cameras – a 2MP image sensor on the back and a front camera for what Telstra says is for “mobile codes” (whatever that means for now).

The unit includes the Android Market app, so you’ll be able to peruse the over 80,000 applications available.

All up, it weighs 500grams according to the company, however what looks to be a bit disappointing is battery life. The T-Touch Tab is capable of making voice calls and will last only 150minutes or 2.5hours. Video playback is also only to 2.5hrs while the battery will last 150hrs in standby.

Telstra says the T-Touch Tab is available for $299 prepaid from Telstra stores now.
