Samsung’s Australian arm announced late this afternoon that it will shortly begin rolling out an Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for its Galaxy S smartphone.
However, the Korean giant is also offering a couple of freebies with the upgrade, including turn-by-turn navigation by Navigon, an $89 value, plus a new Press Reader, that will enable users to subscribe to over 1600 newspapers around the world.
According to Samsung, Galaxy S owners will be able to upgrade to Froyo using its KIES software, which you can download for PC here.
“Providing our customers with the latest and greatest mobile content is key to ensuring the Samsung GALAXY S remains the smartphone of choice for Australians,” said Tyler McGee, Vice President, Telecommunications, Samsung Electronics Australia. “Samsung GALAXY S owners can download a multitude of applications from the Android Market and Samsung Apps to customise the features and benefits of their smartphone to meet their unique needs. Navigation by NAVIGON and Press Reader are two applications that provide improved accessibility and convenience for mobile users.”
Android 2.2 is expected to deliver a smoother performance to the Galaxy S, although there’s no specific word from Samsung on whether it will also deliver 720p (1280×720-pixel) video recording as it did on the HTC Desire.
The update is being progressively rolled out through the various telco networks during December 2010 and January 2011.
It comes after other high profile phones received Froyo updates in the last few weeks from the major telcos including the HTC Desire.
