Reports are coming in thick and fast of Yahoo! looking to slim down its operation by cutting staff and services.

The former internet darling is reportedly set to close a number of services including Yahoo Buzz, MyBlogLog, search engine AltaVista and bookmarking tool Delicious. The company is also expected to let go around 600 staff or four percent of its workforce.

The news gathered pace after a slide from a recent Yahoo presentation began appearing on the web. All Things Digital reports the news first came out from Eric Marcoullier, a former Yahoo staffer. [UPDATE: The information was not leaked by Andy Baio as reported originally.]

The official response from Yahoo is apparently being lined up as :

“Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond. We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others. We will communicate specific plans when appropriate.”

Not a Merry Christmas coming up for those affected.
