One of the lesser known features that the iPad 2 looks to be bringing in is the long-awaited Digital AV Adapter.

Up until now, you could only get composite video or component video or VGA output from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

With the release of the iPad 2 in the US, Apple has launched the $US39 Digital AV Adapter that basically is a 30-pin connector to HDMI output. It’s effectively a Y-cable as it also gives you access to the 30-pin connector too so you can charge your iWhatever while you’re using it.

At the moment, this adapter isn’t available in Australia but here’s hoping it arrives in support of the iPad 2 on March 25.

But this cable doesn’t just work with the iPad 2 – it’ll give HDMI video output from the iPhone 4, fourth-gen iPod Touch and the original iPad.

If you rent movies via iTunes, it’ll be an easy way to watch those movies on you big screen TV without having to worry about using an AppleTV – and you’ll be able to carry those movies around far more easily.
