Answer: Yes, technically you can. Hopefully, Apple’s Australian arm does the right thing and brings its Digital AV Adapter into the country when the iPad 2 launches next week.

The Digital AV Adapter is a 30-pin connector on one end and an HDMI and 30-pin port on the other. This not only gives you HDMI output but also the ability to connect gear to the iPad, such as the power adapter.

At the moment, Apple doesn’t sell this adapter through its Australian store, only in the US where it sells for $US39.

With the iPad 2′s ability to pump out 1080p (1920×1080-pixel) video through HDMI, it’ll be a neat portable movie player and a decent way of hiring videos from iTunes and being able to watch them at a mate’s place.

But the great thing is this adapter won’t just work with the iPad 2 but also the original iPad, the iPhone 4 and fourth-gen iPod Touch (although only at 720p on these devices).

The iPad 2′s A5 processor has sufficient horsepower to playback 108op video while the A4 chip can only deal with 720p (1280×720-pixel) video.
