Get around Windows Vista Premium's 1GB memory requirement and switch Aero on or off at will with our new free VistaAeroSwitch tool.

VistaAeroSwitch works on any version of Vista from Home Premium up and allows you to instantly switch the Aero interface on or off. It also provides you details about your system including processor type and clock speed, memory and graphics card.

While Microsoft states on various websites that you need to have 1GB of system memory and a DirectX9 graphics card with 128MB of memory before Aero will automatically switch on, you can switch it on yourself with as little as 384MB of system memory and integrated graphics with as little as 8MB of memory.

VistaAeroSwitch, developed by Darren Yates, bypasses Vista's desktop manager settings and allows you to switch Aero on or off with a single click, even if your PC doesn't fit Vista's Aero requirements.

Once you've downloaded VistaAeroSwitch, just double-click on the install file and install it. If you have trouble getting it to run, you may need to turn off UAC (User Account Controls) or you may have to run the tool in Administrator mode. To do this, right-click on the program icon and select "Run as Administrator". VistaAeroSwitch makes changes to two registry entries that control Aero turning it on or off without the need to restart your PC or ntoebook.
