New version features much-improved interface with a better look and feel in keeping with the Apple's soon-to-be-released iPhone. Our first version of Gcalc received as many brickbats as bouquets, mostly for the (we’re happy to admit) ordinary interface. I think one comment was that it had been hit with an ugly stick. We’ll, we’ve started again from the ground up and this time, given it a more Mac-like feel with a brushed aluminium interface, interactive buttons and a clean design. To operate Gcalc 2, you start by hitting the line keys – W for watts, E for Electricity costs and H to enter in the hours. After hitting the appropriate line key, you then enter in your desired number. Once you’ve completed all three line entries, hit the “=” key to see the result. The “C” key has two modes – in data entry mode, it allows you to backspace your last entry but in results mode, it resets the display back to original mode for another calculation. So to calculate the cost of a device pulling 75W for 10 hours per day with a 14.5cent per kWh electricity charge, you type: W75H10E14.5= When you’re done looking at the result, hit the “C” (for “clear”) key to run another calculation. You can try this new Gcalc 2 at http://techlogg.com/gcalc2/gcalc2.html. You'll also need to use Apple's Safari 3 Beta web browser to get this working correctly. |
