Company building backlights for notebook computers sees huge expansion for new lighting technology. Backlight units (BLUs) are going through a radical change at the moment as the traditional cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) are about to be replaced by LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes. LEDs provide a more even light and use less power than CCFLs and although they only account for 5% of the market, reports are that at least one manufacturer expects that to rise dramatically where one in four notebooks release in 2008 will be LED backlit. DigiTimes talked to Fred Huang, general president of Coretronics’ BLU business, which started shipping LED BLUs in June 2007 with Huang reportedly saying that although LED BLUs are currently three times the price of most CCFL options, price reductions due to growing competition will see 25% of 2008’s shipments of notebooks worldwide feature the new backlight technology. While LED technology would also see use in LCD monitor technology, Huang believed that colour saturation was still a problem for LEDs when used in TV applications. He expected CCFLs to remain the dominant force in LCD TVs for the immediate future. International vendors such as Dell are reported to have already begun ordering LED-backlit notebooks although models and details of production or release dates have not been confirmed.
