Company will preload Red Hat Linux on dx2250 desktop PC aimed at small business market.

US-based PC giant Hewlett-Packard today announced that it will begin offering Linux preloaded on one of its desktop PC ranges in the Australian market. The company says it will offer Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop preloaded on its new HP dx2250 desktop PC with an eye to growing its share of the small to medium business (SMB) market.

The HP Compaq dx2250 desktop PC is a range of systems under the one banner offering AMD processor technology based on Sempron, Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 chips.

"HP is pleased to be working with Red Hat to bring a powerful new Linux desktop solution to SMBs in Australia,” said Rob Kingston, Group Manager, Product Marketing, Personal Systems Group at HP Australia.  “Local businesses are constantly demanding enhancements to the price-performance delivered by their desktop PC. By working with Red Hat, HP now delivers the business-class technology of the HP dx2250 combined with an open and low-cost operating system to support the commercial objectives of small and medium businesses."

Red hat Enterprise Linux 5 comes with a range of business extras including OpenOffice word processor/spreadsheet/database and presentation software along with Firefox web browser and Evolution email client.

Red Hat will provide Level 1 through Level 3 support for the software.

“AMD has always been at the forefront of embracing the open source community,” said Darryl Leong, Business Development Manager at AMD Australia and New Zealand.  “AMD’s agreement with HP and Red Hat is further evidence of our commitment to all open source platforms and operating systems. This enables all level of business to deploy secure and powerful AMD technology based systems, on a common and consistent architecture, while providing impressive performance per watt power savings and reliability, thus making this initiative between AMD, HP and Red Hat, a ‘Smarter Choice’.”

At time of publishing, the dx2250 systems available on the HP Australia website (there are nine in total) are all based on Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows XP Professional operating systems with no specifics available on Linux-ready systems at time of writing. The currently available dx2250 systems top out with AMD’s Athlon 64 X2 4000+ processor, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of memory and Windows Vista Business edition operating system.

Prices for the Linux/dx2250 bundle are expected to start at $AUD600 ($US490) and will be available through registered HP resellers.
